Introduction: Prior knowledge will be activated when the teacher will ask her students to recall what book they read the day before during Writers Workshop (When I Was Nine). The teacher will review with the students the memorable language that was used by the author James Stevenson in the memoir When I was Nine and elements of the book (i.e. Main Character). The teacher will then read the picture book, Fireflies! to the students. Before reading the book, the teacher will ask students to pay attention to the memorable language being used by the author, and will be asked to write it down in their writing notebooks while they are listening to the story. Developmental Activities: Following the discussion of the picture book Fireflies! the teacher will then tell the students that they are comparing the picture book they read yesterday (When I was Nine) and the picture book they just finished reading (Fireflies !) using the Venn diagram. The Venn diagram will be drawn on the chart paper. The students have some experience using a Venn diagram. However, the teacher will go over the format of the Venn diagram as a quick review. Furthermore, the students will have a worksheet that will look like the teachers chart paper Venn diagram. The students will use their clip boards from their Writing caddies. Concluding Activities: Following the completion of the Venn diagram of When I was Nine and Fireflies! students will be asked to return to their seats and find memorable language in their own writing (Memoir). Students then will be asked to return to the “Gathering Area”, and sit around the perimeter of the rug. Each student will be given the opportunity to share their example of memorable language. Evaluation: Students will be informally assessed by their teacher through direct and indirect questioning. This will be done while the teacher is reading the picture book Fireflies! , during the completion of the Venn diagram, and when they have chosen memorable language from their writing.
